In this blog, we’ll help you with the step-by-step process to attach a steel end post to your brick entry securely. You’ll know the tools needed and the best method to follow for building a strong and good-looking entryway that matches your vision.

Tools and Materials You’ll Need

Here’s a list of tools and materials you’ll need for this project:

  • Drill
  • Drill bits
  • Reo/Rebar reinforcing
  • Threaded rod
  • Concrete mix
  • Mixing bucket or wheelbarrow
  • Measuring tape
  • Level
  • Safety gear (gloves, goggles, mask)

Step-by-Step Guide to Attaching the End Post

Step 1: Drill Hole in Concrete Footing

The first step is to drill a hole in the concrete footing. This hole will anchor the reo, which in turn will support your end post. Here’s how to do it:

1. Mark the Spot:

Use a marker or chalk to mark the spot where you want to drill the hole. Ensure it’s precisely where the end post will be placed.

2. Drill the Hole:

Using a drill and the appropriate drill bit, create a hole in the concrete footing. The hole should be deep enough to accommodate the reo and provide sturdy support.

3. Insert Reo:

Cut 3 or 4 pieces of reo to the appropriate length. Insert these pieces into the hole you’ve just drilled. The reo will reinforce the concrete and provide extra stability for the end post.

Tip: Use a hammer to tap the reo into the hole if it’s a tight fit. This ensures they are securely embedded.

Step 2: Position and Secure the Post

With the reo in place, it’s time to position and secure the post:

1. Place the Post Over the Reo:

Carefully position the end post over the rebar. The post should slide over the reo smoothly. Ensure it’s straight and in the correct position.

2. Use a Threaded Rod Coated with Epoxy:

To secure the top of the post, drill a hole into the top of the post and also into the brick pillar.  Insert the short length of the threaded rod into the brick pillar once filled with ReoSet 502 Plus Chemset Epoxy Once the threaded rod is set place the post and tighten the nut.

Note:  Ensure there is a 10mm packer between the post and brick pillar so there is a sufficient gap for the post cap to slide over top once complete.

3. Leave a Gap for the Cap:

Make sure to leave a small gap at the top of the post. This gap is necessary to fit the cap on later. Without this gap, you might have trouble securing the cap properly.

Step 3: Pour Concrete Inside the Post

The final step is to fill the inside of the post with concrete, finishing the concrete level just below the bottom rail slot. This will secure the bottom of the post, firmly tying it to the brick pillar footing.

1. Mix the Concrete:

Prepare your concrete mix according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Use a mixing bucket or wheelbarrow to combine the mix with water until it reaches the right consistency. You may want to do the mix slightly runnier than normal so you can pour it down the top of the post.

2. Pour the Concrete:

Carefully pour the wet concrete down inside the post. Fill it up to the top of the bottom rail. This will help the post stay in place and provide additional support.

Tip: Allow the concrete to cure properly before applying any additional pressure or weight to the post. This can take up to 24-48 hours, depending on the concrete mix and weather conditions.

Additional Tips and Considerations

Check for Level:

Throughout the process, use a level to ensure your post is perfectly vertical. A crooked post will look terrible against a vertical pillar!

Safety First:

Always wear appropriate safety gear.

Quality Materials:

Invest in high-quality materials. Never use rapid set for installation of Premium Steel Post and Rail Fencing.
