3 situations where multiple fencing is a good idea

Typically, large commercial farms will have different types of fencing in their layout, while smaller domestic owners prefer uniform horse fencing across their properties. However, there are three main situations where multiple fencing could be a great solution.

1. Mixed fencing can help bring the cost down

If you have a large property and using uniform fencing across all the areas is going over budget, then using a combination of different fencing options could be the answer. The front of your property needs to look more aesthetically pleasing so you can use your preferred fencing here, while the back won’t get seen as much and can have different fencing. You can use Map My Fence tool to get an idea of your fencing budget.

2. Different activities require different fencing

Huge horse farms or large domestic properties can have a lot of different sections meant for different activities. Multiple fencing helps you find the best fit for a particular area, enabling the ideal use of fencing as well as the space.

For example, fencing material used in a foaling yard could be different than the fencing used in a day yard to hold a stallion.

3. Choose a fence that compliments your view

In horse properties, there are areas where the view itself needs more attention than the fencing. This is often referred to as ‘low visual impact fencing’ and it is preferable to use a simpler fencing option for better viewing as compared to your high investment or high visual impact fencing used across the property.

New call-to-action

The best practices to follow while mixing different types of horse fencing

Your property is a canvas and when you design it using different types of fencing, you can either paint a beautiful image or perhaps go wrong with the whole picture.

Based on our experience, we would like to share some key insights that might help you avoid the most common mistakes and achieve your desired look with mixed fencing.

Keep the Top Rail uniform across your property

The biggest challenge in designing a horse property using multiple fences is that the entire property doesn’t look in sync. Or the uniform look and feel of the property gets compromised.

To avoid this, we have a simple solution. If you’re using Post and Rail horse fencing, you can use a top rail across your property and combine it with different kinds of fencing underneath that suits your budget.

Suppose you have used Buckley 3 Rail fencing in the high visual areas, for the back paddocks you can Legacy Rail BOLD which has the same width rail and same colour so it is difficult to see the difference from a distance.

Alternatively, if you’re using Horserail you can use 3 rails in the front paddocks and move to hot cote underneath the top rail for the low visibility areas.

Choose different fencing with a uniform colour

When designing your property with multiple fences, avoid mixing colours.

For example, if you’re using black Buckley Steel Post and Rail, then use black fencing for all of your property. Don’t mix white Horserail or other white fencing in between.

Different fencing options might come in different gradients of black, white or other shades. Take that into consideration and check out the specific colour before putting up your fences.

Select different fencing with similar dimensions

If you are mixing and matching different styles of fencing, a great way to find the right combination is to check if they have similar dimensions. Using rails with identical height and width gives an impression of beautifully designed horse property with a uniform look.

For example, the measurements of Buckley Steel Fencing System and Legacy Rail Bold are quite similar, so they make a great combination to be used together on a horse property.

Explore different options to find your desired look

Even if you’re using multiple fencing options, make sure the cost-effective choice installed in the least visible areas doesn’t ruin all your hard work done across the property.

Choose your alternate fencing wisely. Start with your perfect fencing option first and keep exploring as many combinations as possible till they fit your vision and your budget.

If you’re using Horserail you can combine top rail with hot cote, or V-mesh or no climb mesh in the back paddocks. Or even have only hot cote as well. The idea is to maximise looks in the budget you are happy to invest.

Advantages of using multiple horse fencing together

Maximises the potential of every area

Mixed fencing lets you choose the best fencing material for a particular area, depending on the activities and the need of the horse property. Thus, every part of your property is fully utilised for different functions.

Opens up fencing options and opportunities

The freedom to choose different types of fencing lets you explore options that fit your looks, functionality and budget.

Get the dream look without too much compromise

If you can’t use uniform fencing across your property, it doesn’t mean you have to give up your vision and choose something that you don’t like. Multiple fencing gives you the option to achieve the look you wanted with a few changes in the original plan.

Achieve a balanced look

Sometimes when a lot of Post and Rail fencing is used in a smaller area, particularly with white fencing this can sometimes look cluttered and make the property feel over-crowded.  Mixed fencing such as a single rail other than the front fence can help achieve a much more balanced look while keeping the natural beauty of your property intact.

Disadvantages of using multiple horse fencing together

High-end properties have uniform fencing

In our experience, the most stunning signature equine properties have used the same horse fencing across their land.

Using different types of fencing can lead to a disorganised look

If fencing is mixed and matched without carefully working on the design, the whole look can be chaotic and underwhelming.

What horse fence is best for me?

Using multiple horse fencing to achieve the desired look on a fixed budget can be tricky. You might not achieve the results you want and can end up with awkward-looking mixed fencing.

In this article, you learnt when and how to design your horse property using different types of fencing. You now know the right combinations and the best practices to follow that will help you achieve your dream fencing look while staying within your budget.

Like any other horse fencing, using multiple fencing options together has its own pros and cons. At the end, it depends on what’s your vision and budget for your forever equine property and whether mixed fencing is the right solution for you.

If you are confident about designing with multiple fencing, it’s better to choose a supplier who has a wide range of options and doesn’t just manufacture a single product. It will be a lot more convenient and manageable for you than ordering single fencing from different manufacturers and combining them yourself.

At Stock & Noble, we sell a wide range of fencing solutions and offer an option of combining different fencing styles as our client desires. All our options are horse safe so there’s no compromise on safety.

If you have started designing your fencing layout with different fencing options, it will be a good idea to include horse gates at this point and learn how to choose the best horse gate for your property.
